Was Your Broker Shocked, Shocked! To Learn of the Huge Losses in Your Account?
It should come as no surprise that history, and economic history in particular, moves in cycles. By cycles, we mean hills and valleys, or put it more bluntly, good and bad times. Some investors come into the market and all they know of, at least until the disaster strikes, are good times. Other investors have seen it all before, and they know that good times are followed by bad times, as certainly as the sun rises in the morning. Ordinary people sometimes forget about these eternal cycles, but because they have all of life to divert their attention, they should be forgiven for their lack of memory. Investment professionals, however, are paid to know, and to remember, and they cannot, and should not, be forgiven if they led clients to believe that investing is entirely predictable, or like an upward slanted line, rather than a progression of cycles, which cannot be accurately predicted, or avoided.
While these cycles are impossible to avoid or accurately predict, they are not wholly unforeseeable; rather, they can be anticipated, or expected, or protected against, based upon facts, and information. These facts and information are what an investment professional is expected to gather, and consider, when providing guidance and advice. Sadly, in these jaded times, it seems as if many, if not most investment professionals acted as if they were first time investors, rather than seasoned veterans, insofar as they guided their clients into the current disaster. Because what is presently happening is nothing more or less than what has happened many times before, and what will happen many times in the future, investment professionals really cannot claim to have been shocked, or surprised, by what is going on. If they do, their credibility must be viewed as on par with the expression of outrage voiced by Captain Louis Renault, when he "discovered" gambling in Rick's Cafe in Casablanca. In short, not worthy of your belief.
